As a virtual assistant, the first question people usually ask me is: “What exactly do you do?”
And I get it. A virtual assistant title is pretty vague. Some might think of you as a typical assistant who books travel and schedules meetings. And while some VAs do these things, the world of virtual assisting is varied!
Here are some of the tasks I’ve done since starting:
Graphic Design
Creating flyers, designing brochures, and creating social media posts for Instagram and Facebook are usually tasks that have fallen under this. And no, I didn’t get a graphic design degree. I learned Canva and use that for all of my graphic design.
Social Media Marketing
In addition to designing posts on Canva, I’ve also created Instagram Reels and managed Facebook pages. This also includes responding to comments, scrolling social media for trending content ideas, and engaging with the online community.
Client Acquisition
Essentially, this is figuring out ways to help your client get their own clients. Whether it’s creating a lead magnet or posting about your client in Facebook groups when people are looking for freelancers or businesses, your goal when doing this is to help your client’s business grow.
CRM Management
Your client likely has a list of people they work with or their own clients. Managing their CRM system (whether an excel spreadsheet or an actual program) usually involves adding clients to their database, updating information, and even organizing or tagging people. If you like data entry, this is a great option for you, as managing a CRM system can be tedious to a lot of business owners.
Website Maintenance & Design
Businesses need websites and often the world of website design can be overwhelming to a lot of people. I’ve created websites for people or have updated their outdated websites. Sometimes, this involves updating certain content on their site and not changing the entire site. Usually, knowing a certain platform like WordPress or Squarespace will help you with this.
Copywriting
Copywriting is convincing people to do something — buy a program or product, visit an event, etc. Unlike content writing which is usually informational or entertaining, copywriting is a lot about sales. As a website designer, I’ve also offered to work on copywriting on the website.
Content Writing
Writing blog posts is specifically what I’ve done with content writing. Usually, the client will have a specific topic you’ll write about.
Newsletter Management
Creating newsletters is a common task! This usually involves some level of writing skill and design skill, as you’ll likely be creating the newsletter from scratch. You’ll also need to know a certain newsletter system like Mailchimp or ConvertKit.
Video Editing
And finally, video editing is a task becoming more common, as YouTube, Reels, and TikTok videos are popular! Video editing takes a lot of time so it’s no wonder that businesses or clients want to outsource this. This task requires you to understand how to edit videos, either in a free program like iMovie or a paid one like FinalCut Pro. However, if you become good at this skill, the earning potential is high!
Don’t look at this list and think, “I have to do all that?!”
No! Your virtual assistant journey might look different. Your skills might be heavier on the admin side. Or maybe you only want to focus on one task. That’s okay too.
The point is that I’ve used my skills with different clients and in different ways, and you can do the same.
If using several of your skills sounds exciting to you, if you enjoy doing different tasks, if you’re the person people rely on to do all those “little” things, then you just might make a great virtual assistant!
